MSDA Coffee Hour: "Covid-19-Prepare, Plan and Prevent"--
Thursday, March 26th, 2020 2:00 ET
March 20, 2020- This week, CDC and CMS issued Covid-19 Dental Guidance recommending that dental offices postpone elective procedures, surgeries, and non-urgent dental visits; and prioritize urgent and emergency visits and procedures now and for the next several weeks.
These recommendations, while essential during this Covid-19 national Public Health State of Emergency, are creating challenges across the dental community, affecting both the practice of dentistry and the administration of Medicaid dental services.
We in dentistry are caught in a conundrum at this time. Some dental services are considered essential and must be made readily available to the public during the crisis; yet others are considered non-essential requiring the public and providers to wait for dental care, until the crisis is averted.
1—How does a State Medicaid Dental Program respond to the immediate demands of the public and dental providers during this crisis and period of uncertainty?
2—How do State Medicaid Dental Programs and their dental providers prepare for the next phase of this pandemic, when the immediate threat of COVID-19 has subsided yet the potential for re-emergence still exists?
3—What can States do now to address these concerns and prevent the down-stream adverse consequences of drastically limiting preventive/treatment dental services to high-risk beneficiaries for an undetermined period of time?
These questions are important; and thoughtful solutions must be developed especially if the current crisis or some form of it continues indefinitely.
To address these questions, MSDA will host a “Coffee Hour” to explore each question, engage members in discussion, and offer potential stopgap solutions for dental care during this designated federal Public Health Emergency.
Dr. Richard Niederman, DMD, Professor and Chair, Department of Epidemiology & Health Promotion and Co-Director, WHO Collaborating Center at the New York University, College of Dentistry will join us and share insight from his work in Boston and at NYU.
